According to the EMY bulletin, today will initially be cloudy in the west and then either local rains or sporadic storms will begin, mainly in the Ionian, Epirus, western Central Greece and later from the afternoon hours in the western Peloponnese.
Afterwards, the weather will remain clear, except for a few clouds in the eastern Aegean islands, the Dodecanese, the Cyclades and Crete. Also, in the rest of Greece, local rains will occur again in areas of western and central Macedonia, in Thessaly, central Central Greece, while they will also be felt from Saturday evening in the Sporades of eastern Macedonia, Thrace and perhaps less in the eastern Peloponnese.
Also, this afternoon a little snow will fall in the mountains of Macedonia and Epirus, with the visibility in the continental areas in the morning hours being locally limited, with the possibility of the formation of fog.
Winds will be west south-southeast 4 to 5 and in the Ionian locally 6, gradually turning to south-southwest temporarily locally up to 7 Beaufort in the Ionian. In the east it will blow north-northeast 4 to 5, locally in the south 6 Beaufort weakening, turning from the afternoon to south directions 3 to 5, locally in the northern Aegean 6 Beaufort.
The temperature will drop slightly in northern Greece, where it will not exceed 12 to 13 degrees, while in the rest of the country it will reach 14 to 17 and locally in the Ionian Islands and the Dodecanese 18 degrees Celsius.
Arnaoutoglou: Possibility of “snow surprises” at Christmas
For his part, Sakis Arnautoglou also spoke about a change in the weather, saying that from noon on Saturday, rains will occur in western Greece, while storms are not ruled out. The phenomena “will pass through northern Greece, much weaker” in the evening, he also said.
In fact, he spoke of a high chance of rain in the northwest, almost in all the Ionian Islands – mainly in the north of the Ionian – in Epirus, the western, mountainous Thessaly and the northwestern Peloponnese, from noon to evening.
On Sunday, the weather will be unsettled and showers are expected in the eastern Aegean islands, the Cyclades and western Crete. From Lemnos to the northern parts of the Cyclades, the phenomena cannot be ruled out to be intense.
Also, Sakis Arnautoglou referred to the new forecast data for the weather on Christmas days, speaking of “accumulation of quite cold towards December 20, 21, 22 in the Balkans and in general in Eastern Europe”.
“There are indications that for the time being it is not excluded that between December 20 and 25 we will have some descents of quite cold air. There is a possibility of “snow surprises”, he continued.
“It remains to be seen if it will descend south, how far south and if it will combine with barometric lows to deliver snow surprises,” he concluded.
EMY forecast for Saturday (14/12) by region
MACEDONIA, THRACE
Weather: Temporarily increased clouds where there will be local rains initially in western and central Macedonia and in the evening in the rest of the regions.
Winds: Initially easterly 2 to 4 and from the afternoon from south directions locally up to 5 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 04 to 12 to 13 degrees Celsius. In western Macedonia 4 to 5 degrees lower and frost is likely to occur in the morning hours.
IONIAN ISLANDS, EPIROS, WEST STEREA, WEST PELOPONNISOS
Weather: Increased clouds with local rains and sporadic storms initially in the Ionian, Epirus and western Sterea and from the afternoon hours in the western Peloponnese. The effects will probably be strong in places.
Winds: From south directions 4 to 6 and in the Ionian temporarily 7 Beaufort in places.
Temperature: From 06 to 17 degrees and in the Ionian region 18 degrees Celsius. In the interior of Epirus 4 to 5 degrees lower.
EASTERN STEREA, EVIA, EASTERN PELOPONNISOS
Weather: Temporarily increased clouds with the possibility of local rains in the Eastern Peloponnese in the evening hours.
Winds: Initially north northeast 4 to 5 Beaufort, which will quickly weaken and turn from the afternoon to south directions 3 to 5, to the east in the evening local 6 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 05 to 16 degrees Celsius.
CYCLADES, CRETE
Weather: Almost clear with a few clouds, increased in places.
Winds: Initially from the north directions 4 to 5, locally 6 Beaufort which will quickly weaken and turn to south southwest 3 to 4 and locally 5 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 12 to 17 degrees Celsius.
EAST AEGEAN ISLANDS – DODECANISE
Weather: Generally clear. From the afternoon, sparse clouds in places thicker with local rains on the islands of the north-eastern Aegean in the evening hours.
Winds: Initially north northeast 4 to 5 and in the south 6 Beaufort which will quickly weaken and turn to south directions 2 to 4 and in the north locally up to 5 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 13 to 18 degrees Celsius. In the north 4 to 5 degrees lower.
THESSALY
Weather: Temporarily increased clouds with local rains mainly in the Sporades in the afternoon.
Winds: Variable 3 and in the Sporades initially east northeast 4 which will weaken and from the afternoon will turn to south 4 to 5, locally 6 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 04 to 14 degrees Celsius.
ATTICA
Weather: A few clouds which will increase in the evening hours.
Winds: Initially from north directions 3 to 4 and east to 5 Beaufort which will quickly weaken and turn to south 4 to 5 and to the east in the evening hours to 5 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 07 to 16 degrees Celsius.
THESSALONIKI
Weather: Increased clouds with rain from the afternoon hours.
Winds: Southeast 3 to 4 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 06 to 11 to 12 degrees Celsius.
Weather forecast for Sunday (15/12)
In the Ionian islands, the western mainland, the eastern Aegean islands and gradually in the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese, clouds with local rain and sporadic storms. The phenomena will quickly weaken in the west, while in the islands of the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese they will gradually intensify.
In the rest of the country, clouds temporarily increased with local rains mainly in Macedonia, Thrace, Sporades, Evia and eastern Sterea. A little snow will fall in the northern mountains.
Winds will be west west northwest 4 to 5 Beaufort. In the east, south-southwest winds will blow 5 to 6 and in the Aegean locally 7 Beaufort winds, gradually turning to west-northwest winds with the same intensity.
The temperature will not change appreciably. It will reach 14 to 15 degrees in the north, 16 to 19 degrees in the rest of the mainland and the island country and 20 degrees Celsius locally in Crete.
Forecast for Monday (16/12)
Increased clouds with local rains in the eastern mainland and in the Sporades, Evia, Cyclades, the islands of the eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese and Crete sporadic storms. The phenomena from the north will gradually stop and will be limited in the evening hours in Crete with a gradual weakening. In the rest of the country, a few clouds temporarily increased in the Ionian and the western continental areas in the morning hours with local rains mainly in the maritime – coastal areas and gradual improvement.
A few snowfalls will occur in the northern and central mountains.
Winds will blow from north directions 5 to 6, in the seas 7 and in the Aegean locally 8 Beaufort.
The temperature will drop across the country.
Weather forecast for Tuesday (17/12)
Generally clear weather with a few clouds in places increased in the south in the morning hours, so there will be temporary local rains in Crete and the Dodecanese.
Winds will blow from north directions 4 to 6 and in the central and southern Aegean locally 7 Beaufort, with gradual weakening from noon.
