New season from March 23, 2024 with many event highlights

Vienna (OTS/RK) In Laxenburg, Lower Austria, a few kilometers from Vienna, there is one of the largest castle complexes in Austria. The associated Laxenburg Palace Park, in which Wien Holding also has a stake, is one of the most important garden monuments in Austria and Europe. Picturesque landscapes, wide meadows, mighty groups of trees and the huge castle pond create a unique composition. The ferry to Franzensburg is serviced every five to seven years. Today, on March 21, 2024, after the successful overhaul, it was raised back into the castle pond in front of Franzensburg.

“With the launch of the ferry after returning from the workshop, we are ringing in a new season with numerous highlights in the Laxenburg Castle Park, from the guest performance of Circus Picard to the Laxenburg Cultural Summer and the Klangwelle. The preservation of this beautiful facility is important to us, which is why we are investing in structural measures and in desludging the castle pond,” said Wien Holding managing director Mag. Oliver Stribl, who was on site to see for himself the laborious process of lifting the ferry into the castle pond.

60 years old and in great shape

The 60-year-old ferry operates at the castle pond during the season from Easter to All Saints’ Day. Since the ferry company is a licensed shipping company, attention is paid to traffic safety and a major overhaul is carried out every five to seven years. The work takes place in the workshops of Schloss Laxenburg Betriebsgesellschaft mbH. The entire paint job will be renewed and the technical equipment such as controls and electric drive will be overhauled. The ferry has an empty weight of six tons, measures approximately 7 x 3.3 meters and was built by the Port of Vienna in 1964. It is powered by a computer control and a 3.7 kilowatt electric motor.

Castle park is being made fit for the future

Laxenburg is one of the most important excursion destinations for Viennese people in the Lower Austrian area. The impressive number of visitors shows how important the area is for the population of both federal states. Around a million guests are counted every year. Against this background, an investment package worth ten million euros was decided on in 2022 to make the castle and park fit for the future and even more attractive for people.

The orangery has now been completely renovated, new sanitary facilities have been built and work has also begun on restoring the Franzensburg’s art objects. The procurement process for desludging the castle pond will take place in 2024. Starting in late autumn, around 80,000 cubic meters of sludge will be vacuumed out. Particular emphasis is placed on nature conservation; as a Natura 2000 area, the effects of interventions must be kept to a minimum. The work will be carried out from the inaccessible eastern bank when the castle pond is full. The redesign of the main park entrance and the restoration of the tournament area are in intensive planning phase with the Federal Monuments Office.

Start of the 2024 season with many highlights

On Saturday, March 23, 2024, the Laxenburg Castle Park starts the 2024 season. From this day on, the Franzensburg and the museum shop will be open again and the ferry will begin its scheduled service for the 213th time. The boat rental service at the castle pond is also happy to receive numerous visitors. The castle park already presents itself as a magical spring landscape and invites you to spend relaxing hours. Numerous events are also on the program again. These include the Circus Picard, which will be performing in the castle park at the end of April, and also the historical park tours, during which visitors can discover the unique origin story and the diverse botany of the castle park. From June 9th, the Laxenburg Cultural Summer will take place again in the inner courtyard of Franzensburg. The coming season promises an outstanding highlight. Under the title “THE REST IS SILENCE”, cultural summer director Adi Hirschal is presenting a brand new piece full of humor and irony together with a talented cast for the very last time. In summer, the sound wave in Laxenburg Castle Park will once again delight with a bombastic show of water, fire, light, artistry and music. Preparations are currently in full swing.
