These landscapes are considered to describe what Finland is like.
Finland has 27 official national landscapes, i.e. sites that are considered to embody the culture or nature of different parts of the country particularly well.
So there are built environments as well as popular camping destinations.
National landscapes were chosen by the national landscape working group of the Ministry of the Environment. The elections were related to the 75th anniversary of Finland’s independence, which was celebrated in 1992.
We picked 10 examples of our country’s national landscapes. Based on them, this is what Finland looks like.
The old town of Porvoo
The old town of Porvoo is a charming milieu of wooden houses, the landmark of which is the handsome medieval stone church. It is a popular year-round tourist destination. Alamy/AOP
Espoo’s Tapiola
Also called the Garden City, Espoo’s Tapiola is known for its architecture. The Finnish Museum Agency has defined it as a nationally significant built cultural environment. Alamy/AOP
Archipelago
The Archipelago Sea, located on the southwest coast of Finland, is dotted with about 40,000 islands or islets. The nature of the area is very diverse, and many endangered species live there. alamy/PDO
Tammerkoski
Tammerkoski is Finland’s oldest and best-known industrial landscape. Its handsome red-brick former factory buildings have now been put to new use. They include, for example, restaurants and museums. Ismo Pekkarinen/AOP

Väisälänmäki

Flounder
