“In most of the Zlín region and in the south-east of the South Moravian region, temperatures rose during the night, up to five degrees Celsius in Bojkovice, so the risk of ice formation in these places has more or less disappeared because the surface temperature has also increased,” stated the CHMÚ.

The warning for the eastern regions of the Czech Republic ended this morning. At the same time, meteorologists warned of freezing precipitation, which moved to part of the Central Bohemian region, especially to Berounsko, Kladensko, Rakovnicko and the surroundings of Slané, as well as to the western part of the Ústecký region.

“Since the morning, all the roads in the entire territory of the region have frozen over. The ice is mainly formed by fog,” stated Josef Holek from Central Bohemia Road Administration and Maintenance. While only eight spreaders worked in the Kutná Hora area in the morning, they are now in the field in all parts of the region.

Falls on the ice and into the stream

Rescuers treated three dozen people who were injured when they slipped and fell on the ice in the Moravian-Silesian region until 12:00 today. All the injured in a stable condition were taken to the accident clinics of the catchment hospitals.

Among the most common were injuries to hands and feet, less frequent were head injuries, three people were injured in the torso area. For example, in the Karvinska region, a senior fell on the ice when he went outside the house in the morning to get wood for heating. He hurt his leg and couldn’t get home. He received help only after about an hour and a half, when his relatives found him.

A thirty-five-year-old man slipped and fell into a stream in Novojičín. “Due to the icy shore, he was unable to climb out on his own. He was helped out by the police, who called a paramedic to the hypothermic man. They also provided him with the necessary first aid. The man was hypothermic and the paramedics handed him over to the care of the internal ambulance at Nový Jičín hospital,” said regional emergency medical service spokesman Lukáš Humpl.

Due to the ice, the paramedics could not reach the patient in the Opava region during the night. This helped the firemen who reached the scene from the opposite side, provided the patient with first aid and then helped with his transport.

“In the evening and in the first half of the night, we expect more precipitation, which in the western half of Bohemia will freeze in places and create glaciers,” stated the CHMÚ. In addition, it will snow in the Karlovy Vary region in the evening and night on Monday. Five to twelve centimeters of mostly wet snow will fall. In the morning and on Monday morning, the snow will decrease. “Complications in Bohemia and southwestern Moravia can also be caused by the isolated formation of ice on Monday in the morning hours,” warned the meteorologists.

“Sunday evening and Monday night will be problematic mainly in the west of Bohemia. By the evening, we expect rain gradually from the south in most areas, but in the west of Bohemia the precipitation will be snowy in all locations, exceptionally even freezing,” meteorologists reported. Snowfall will begin to appear in the Karlovy Vary region, in the northwest of the Plzeň region and in the southwest of the Ústí region after approximately 18:00. “Especially until midnight, heavy snowfall is possible. Up to eight cm of new snow will fall in western Bohemia throughout the night on Monday,” they added.

It is also supposed to snow in the rest of the republic at altitudes above 900 meters.
