Weather | Storms hit: Tornado in southern Bohemia? It was a gustnado, say meteorologists

The wind vortex apparently touched the ground, which is characteristic of a tornado. But for now we are still investigating other circumstances and the classification is not clear,” she stated.

Unlike a tornado, the Gustnado does not deal significant damage and its power is less than it appears at first glance. “It usually only takes a few seconds, minutes at the most,” said Houbová.

She added that gustnado occurs outside the storm cloud. In addition, it tends to be relatively far from the storm. “It is not a completely unique phenomenon. Recently, we have been seeing these phenomena more often, because with mobile phones, people can record them and spread them over the network,” she said.

The original designation of gustnado may not be correct, the ČHMÚ stated on Facebook in the afternoon. “Additional photos have surfaced that show a possible connection to the base of the cloud. But we probably won’t know for sure,” meteorologists wrote. A tornado is characterized by the fact that it is in contact with the surface of the earth and the cloud.

The storms on Monday afternoon in the south of Bohemia mainly affected České Budějovice.

They lasted approximately half an hour, but were intense and caused traffic problems, as some roads were flooded. Tonight then thunderstorms turned into more persistent rain.
