It started snowing already last night, in the west of Bohemia it fell up to three centimeters by morning, but the snow will continue. Until 14:00, the meteorologist’s warning of a new snow cover is valid for western Bohemia, where up to ten centimeters should fall.
The accidents happened in the morning in Karlovy Vary and its surroundings, in Počerny or in the switchbacks on the I/6 road between Karlovy Vary and Prague. Two trucks crashed on a steep hill, another truck is standing on the hill and can’t get out. However, there are single-lane ruts on the D6 highway between Karlovy Vary and Cheb and on most roads at higher elevations.
“Since three o’clock in the morning, we have recorded approximately ten traffic accidents, which luckily did not cause any injuries. Road I/6 from Karlovy Vary in the direction of Prague, highway D6 near Lubnec and road I/13 in the direction from Ostrov to Chomutov are more difficult to drive, especially for trucks,” Jan Bílek, the police spokesman of the Karlovy Vary Region, stated after 7:00 a.m. today. “We appeal to drivers to adapt their driving speed to the current conditions and to increase caution,” the police ask.
Problems with buses around Prague
The weather is also complicating traffic in some places in the Central Bohemia region this morning. Some connections of the Prague Integrated Transport are delayed or buses do not serve the stops. Road users have almost 100 spreaders in the field, informed Petra Kučerová from the regional road administration and maintenance.
Motorways and first-class roads in the Central Bohemia region are chemically treated, but there may be a layer of slush on the road. It also reduces the visibility of snow in places. For example, in Kladensk, Rakovnick and the Prague-Západ district, there is a layer of slush or drifted snow on the lower grade roads. In Slánské and in some areas near Prague, buses do not go to several stops. There are delays in public transport connections in most Central Bohemian districts.
In the Plzeň region, there were also more accidents in connection with the weather. According to the spokeswoman for the regional administration and maintenance of roads, Helena Frintová, today, due to the snowfall, the road crews went out gradually from 2:30 a.m. to all road circuits in all districts of the Pilsen region. “All 105 spreaders were out. As needed, most of them will go out to clear the snow from the roadways even now during the morning,” she stated.
On the D8 highway between the 7th and 9th kilometers in the direction of Ústí nad Labem this morning an accident involving several trucks and cars concluded. One person suffered minor injuries.
It will continue to snow
“Expect snow on Tuesday and Wednesday as well. On Thursday, expect snow only occasionally,” stated the ČHMÚ this morning on the X social network.
The clouds will clear to partly cloudy skies on Thursday, and it may be clear on Friday. The maximum temperature during the day can be only four degrees below zero today, otherwise around zero and, on the contrary, up to plus four degrees Celsius in the southwestern half of the territory. On Tuesday, it should not freeze mostly during the day, from Wednesday to Friday, temperatures should stay around zero. “On Thursday and especially on Friday, the sun’s rays will increase and the precipitation will gradually stop. These days should also be the coldest of the whole week – at night the temperatures will drop to minus three to minus eight degrees Celsius, with little cloud cover and light wind, but locally even below minus ten degrees.” stated the CHMÚ.
For the weekend according to meteorologists there will be a drizzle associated with mostly cloudy skies and frequent rain. Temperatures during the day will rise to five degrees Celsius on Saturday and up to ten degrees Celsius later during the weekend. In the higher mountain areas, the precipitation will probably remain snowy even during the weekend.
