Precautionary measures from African dust

In its announcement, the Hellenic Pulmonary Society recommends to the public, and especially to people of all ages who have respiratory problems with African dust protection measures.

Citizens are recommended to take care of the following:

Monitor the predictions of air quality.
Avoid unnecessarily stay outdoors when dust levels are high.
Keep the doors and windows closed to limit dust entry into space.
Wear a mask in their necessary movements, especially those who have respiratory problems.
To be sufficiently hydrated. To consume plenty of water to avoid mucous membranes.
Particular attention is required by patients with asthma or COPD (there may be a need to adapt their medication to consult with the treating physician).
It is recalled that African dust can significantly deteriorate air quality by transporting fine particles (PM10, PM2.5) and pollutants, which burden respiratory health and cardiovascular system. In addition, chronic exposure to high levels of particles can affect the immune system by making the body more vulnerable to infections.

Inhalation of particles increases the risk of developing or deteriorating diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and allergies, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing. Particularly vulnerable are those who live in urban centers.

According to studies, African dust contributes to increased mortality due to air pollution, with estimates of 42,000 deaths per year in Europe.
