Urban Blooms – this is the name of the project with which Innsbruck Tourism wants to show how close you can be to nature even in the city.
Innsbruck (OTS) – The “Innsbruck City Flowers” are colorful wooden modules, some of which are covered in greenery, which invite people to linger and improve the quality of stay in public spaces. This “pop-up urban furniture” was first installed in Kiebachgasse, where it will remain on display until the end of the summer. They will then be set up in various places and squares in Innsbruck.
The Urban Blooms consist of several elements with different functions: some are planted and thus provide greenery and cooling, while others are used for resting and lingering. They can be flexibly arranged and put together to take into account different conditions and needs. This offers numerous possible uses within Innsbruck. “With the ‘Innsbruck City Blooms’ we want to set specific impulses in the city,” explains Peter Paul MölkChairman of Innsbruck Tourism, the overarching strategic goal: “It is about bringing nature into the city, temporarily upgrading urban spaces and creating a feel-good place that locals and guests like to visit and that reflects Innsbruck as a lively and inviting place to live.” Mariella LutzCity Councillor for Civil Engineering, Business and Tourism, is delighted with the project: “The ‘Urban Blooms’ initiative is an example of the successful interaction between politics, business and tourism. In a very short time, we have succeeded in creating an attractive place that is not only of great importance for the local businesses, but also enriches the entire surrounding area. As City Councillor for Civil Engineering, Business and Tourism, I am particularly pleased to support this unique project.”
New impulses for the city
The “City Blooms” have recently been located in Kiebachgasse, where they are expected to remain until the end of the summer. The location for their “premiere” was chosen deliberately: the aim was to create new incentives for visitors during the ongoing paving work in the alley, which is why local businesses were also involved in the development of the project. Together with them, but also other partners such as the city of Innsbruck, Innsbruck Marketing, the Zentrumsverein and the Hochtief company, the Urban Blooms project was born and implemented within a very short time. “There were just under two months between the idea and the installation,” explains André Lomskyregional manager for the City sub-region at Innsbruck Tourism, explains the background. “The extraordinarily good cooperation between all those involved made this possible.” This includes, not least, the renowned architecture firm Snøhetta, based in Innsbruck, and the Auer Holzmanufaktur, which are responsible for the design and production of the wooden modules.
From one place to another
The street furniture in Kiebachgasse was officially opened on July 16, 2024 with “sweet paving stones” from the Munding confectionery and food served on a paving stone from the Weißes Rössl restaurant. In keeping with their name, the Urban Blooms are to be set up in other parts of Innsbruck in the future. “In the long term and planned as a further development, we would like to implement the concept for our sub-regions in the future and create temporary meeting points there with ‘Alpine Blooms’ and enliven alpine spaces,” says Barbara PlattnerManaging Director of Innsbruck Tourism.
Further statements
“This initiative is intended to invite visitors to discover Kiebachgasse despite the construction site, and thus increase the quality of stay and the frequency of visitors in the alley. The most important goal is that the retail and catering companies located there can continue to operate despite the construction site and that a decline in sales that would otherwise be looming is counteracted.” Klaus Plankhost Weißes Rössl
“We are proud to be able to make a contribution to the beautification and ecological enhancement of Innsbruck’s city center with the new polygonal Urban Blooms. By combining green spaces and seating, we are not only creating a place of relaxation for visitors, but also promoting local value creation and sustainability. This project impressively shows how regional cooperation and innovative design can go hand in hand.” Thomas AuerCEO of Holzmanufaktur und Vitrinenbau Auer GmbH
“The ‘Urban Blooms’ project is close to our hearts in several ways. As an internationally active architectural firm, it is nice to be able to showcase our hometown. On the other hand, it is our aim to design spaces that are as livable, meaningful and sustainable as possible – with Urban Blooms we were able to implement this at short notice. All visitors are given the opportunity to experience the existing space in a new, colorful and lively way.” Patrick LüthManaging Director and Partner Snøhetta Studio Innsbruck ZT GmbH
