Southwestern Bohemia: Extreme precipitation, heated houses, the risk continues

The heavy rainfall that hit the Pilsen region on Tuesday evening caused problems in several places. “In Blížejov na Domažlicko, water got into several houses and yards in the evening after a heavy downpour,” said mayor Jiří Červenka. Firefighters had dozens of trips to fallen trees and water pumping in the region.

“Up to 100 liters per square meter fell in the southwest. Which is really extreme. Normal is 70 liters per m2, but for the whole of May. It rained here in 15 hours,” said meteorologist Dagmar Honsová.

They are assessing the damage

The rain also raised the levels of several streams, the second flood stage applies to the Radbuza in Staňkov in Domažlick. “Water flowed here from the surrounding fields. They have corn on them, so the rain washed mud from the fields into the village. The water reached about four houses and flooded eight to ten yards,” Červenka described.

According to him, there was up to half a meter of water in the village. “It caused damage mainly to private property, when the water recedes, we will investigate the damage to municipal and regional property,” he added.

Flooded rivers

The Radbuza River in Staňkov exceeded the second stage of flood activity at 8 am on Wednesday, and a short-term reaching of the third stage cannot be ruled out.

The levels of especially smaller watercourses reacted quickly to heavy rains. Several smaller streams in the foothills of the České les, especially in the Radbuza, Mže and Úhlava basins, have watered down. “Already on Tuesday evening, Zubřina reached the first stage in Domažlice. The levels of most of the larger streams in the area are still rising.” stated the CHMÚ.

The soil is too saturated

According to meteorologist Honsová, the situation will calm down, such heavy torrential rains are no longer expected, but it is not yet won. Due to the high saturation of the soil with water, even a small storm is enough and again, mainly small streams will rise. “It will rain until the end of the week throughout the territory. More precipitation is expected on Friday and Saturday. In the Southwest, however, there is a higher risk of rising flows precisely because the soil is no longer able to absorb water,” Honsová added.

The regional firefighters had almost 80 calls for so-called technical assistance on Tuesday and today. They cleared trees and pumped water, most often in Domažlicka and Tachovské.
