The Rhône department and Lyon are in orange alert for rain and flood risks Saturday, Météo-France announced on Friday.
The Loire and Ardèche are also affected.
“Strong rainy intensities” in the Gier valley and eastern Lyon
This episode, which had not yet started Friday evening, is “not exceptional for the season” but requires attention due to “strong rainy intensities”, accompanied by thunderstorms. Significant accumulations of water are expected, specifies the agency in its latest bulletin.
Heavy precipitation is coming up through Auvergne this evening, in parallel with an episode of Cevennes rains which gradually spread between the second part of next night and midday on Saturday to the east of Lyon, passing through the Gier valley and the north of Ardèche.

“An area of stormy rain is currently affecting the regions of the Massif Central” and will reach the three departments over the next few hours, Météo-France added late Friday evening.
“High accumulations expected in 3 to 6 hours”
It is a “non-exceptional episode for the season, but requiring special monitoring due to the high rainfall intensities and the high accumulations expected in 3 to 6 hours” in the Rhône.
“On the Givors, Lyon, Miribel axis, the precipitation will be the most intense with accumulations of between 50 to 80mm in Lyonnais and the Gier valley,” according to the Rhône prefecture.
A Cévennes episode began this Friday evening. Meeting a disturbance which comes up through Auvergne this evening, the rains end up stopping from the Cévennes to the Lyonnais via Vivarais, Pilat, the Gier valley and the Rhone Isère in the second part of the night from Friday to Saturday and in the morning of Saturday. The expected accumulations are of the order of 50 to 80 mm in less than 12 hours in the Lyonnais, the Gier valley, 80 to 100 mm in the Monts du Pilat, and 70 to 100 mm in the north of Vivarais, up to 120 mm in the Ardèche Cévenne.
