Residents of a home for the elderly in the Třinec part of Oldřichovice have had a difficult night. “How could someone think of removing the entire roof at once. It’s always done piecemeal, after all.” lamented Emílie Ruszová (93), who woke up in a wet bed.
“I’m half-deaf, so I didn’t hear the firemen at all until I woke up when the water was running in my face. A lot of us were evacuated here. Mrs. Helena (83) next door is just as angry.
“It was terrifying. That water flowed from the ceiling and even over the chandelier. I quickly extinguished the fire and spread the candles around,” said a senior woman who has a third of her room soaked.
The footbridge is gone
Flooded by heavy rain, Olša also decided who would go to school and who wouldn’t. In Vendryna, she tore down a footbridge over which mainly children from the local part of Záolší and Třinec’s Karpentná got on the bus. The footbridge served as a temporary bridge during the reconstruction of the bridge.
“We are dealing with an urgent situation. We are discussing with the carrier how this could be done so as not to complicate the parents’ lives, because otherwise the offspring would have to take a detour to school.” said Třinec spokesman Stanislav Cieslar and that the construction of the new bridge will take about a week.
Mouse hole full of water
It probably didn’t surprise anyone that there is a completely flooded underpass to Třinecké železárnám called the Mouse Hole. It happens with every heavy rain. This time, however, the “swimming pool” was also made at the Napoleon restaurant a short distance from the roundabout.
“The journey from the afternoon shift was crazy. Those who drove a car almost had a boat out of it, those who walked, waded through underpasses up to their knees in water.” illustrated by Aleš Bojko from Třinec.
It was taken by the Frýdek-Místek district
Storms and torrential rains moved from the west of the republic to the east. From Monday 8 a.m. to Tuesday morning, the Moravian-Silesian firefighters sweated through 205 incidents associated with heavy rain, mainly in Frýdecko-Místek. They recorded the largest number of interventions in Třinec, where there were 128. They were involved in 12 cases in the Karviná district, 10 in the Nový Jičín district and one in Ostrava.
“It was primarily about pumping water from flooded basements, cleaning sewer inlets and diverting flowing water using sandbags,” described fire department spokeswoman Kamila Langerová.
