The meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafillias, in his post on Facebook, analyzed the phenomenon of the “subtropical air current” that will launch the mercury in most of the country, with a peak of seven regions.
“The subtropical jet stream (river of air in the upper atmosphere) brings considerable heat and duration, and significant amounts of African dust to our region.”
In more detail, the circulation of the atmosphere in our region from Wednesday 15/5 onwards favors the transport of dust and hot gas masses from the coasts of Africa to our region. This heat wave cannot be ruled out to last until the middle of the next week with the mercury soaring from Friday onwards 10 to 12 degrees above normal levels for the season.
The areas that will be affected by this wave initially are western and southern Greece with the temperature slightly above 30 degrees and from Saturday 18/5 onwards the heat sensitive areas with temperatures above 35 degrees such as Crete (mainly ), Boeotia, Fthiotida, Achaia, Ilia, Argolis and the Dodecanese.
In Attica on the weekend we will exceed 30 degrees, while in Thessaloniki 27″.
Weather: EMY’s forecast for the whole country
According to the EMY, transitory clouds with local rains and possibly isolated storms are expected in Thrace.
In the rest of the regions, the weather will be generally clear, but from noon on the mainland and Crete, clouds will develop and local rains will occur and in the afternoon isolated storms mainly in the mountains.
Visibility in the morning and evening hours mainly in the western continental areas will be locally limited.
Winds will blow from north directions 3 to 5 and in the Aegean locally 6 Beaufort.
The temperature will reach 22 in the northeast and 23 to 26 degrees Celsius in the rest of the country.
MACEDONIA, THRACE
Weather: In Thrace, temporary clouds with local rains and possibly isolated storms. In Macedonia a few clouds that will increase from midday and local rains will occur and in the afternoon isolated storms mainly in the mountains.
Winds: Northerly and gradually easterly 3 to 5 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. In western Macedonia and Thrace 3 to 4 degrees lower.
IONIAN ISLANDS, EPIROS, WEST STEREA, WEST PELOPONNISOS
Weather: Generally clear. In the midday and afternoon hours, clouds will develop in the continental areas and there will be local showers and isolated storms mainly in the mountains.
Winds: West Northwest 3 to 5 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 12 to 25 degrees Celsius.
EASTERN STEREA, EVIA, EASTERN PELOPONNISOS
Weather: Generally clear, but from noon clouds will develop and local rains will occur and in the afternoon isolated storms mainly in the mountains. In the evening in the eastern Peloponnese the weather will improve.
Winds: Northerly 3 to 4 and temporary local 5 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 13 to 26 degrees Celsius.
CYCLADES, CRETE
Weather: Generally clear. In the midday and afternoon hours in Crete, clouds will develop and local rains will occur in the mountains.
Winds: In the Cyclades from north directions 4 to 5 and in the east locally 6 Beaufort. In Crete west northwest 4 to 6 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 15 to 24 and in Crete up to 26 degrees Celsius.
EAST AEGEAN ISLANDS – DODECANISE
Weather: Generally clear, with temporary local clouds in the north in the morning hours.
Winds: Northerly variable 3 to 4 and gradually northeasterly 5 to 6 Beaufort. In the south north northwest 5 to 6 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. In the north 2 to 3 degrees lower.
THESSALY
Weather: Generally clear, but from noon clouds will develop and local rains will occur and in the afternoon isolated storms mainly in the mountains.
Winds: From the north and gradually from the east directions 3 to 4 and in the Sporades locally 5 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 12 to 25 degrees Celsius.
ATTICA
Weather: Generally clear, but from midday clouds will develop and local rains may occur mainly in the mountains.
Winds: Northerly 3 to 4 and temporary local 5 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 14 to 26 degrees Celsius.
THESSALONIKI
Weather: A few clouds that will increase from midday and local rains will occur and in the afternoon possibly isolated storms, mainly in the mountains.
Winds: North northwest 3 to 5 Beaufort, from the afternoon southeast with the same intensity.
Temperature: From 12 to 24 degrees Celsius.
However, a new heat wave is expected in the coming days.
The temperature mainly from Thursday (16/05) is expected to rise and reach 30 to 31 degrees initially in western and southern Greece, while the African dust will also return until Sunday (19/05).
The heat wave is coming from Saturday (18/05) onwards throughout the territory.

Generally clear weather throughout the country, but in the hot hours in the mainland and Crete, clouds will develop and local showers or isolated storms will occur.
