Moravian-Silesian police officers recorded the first cases of attempted robbery. Thousands of people had to leave their homes. “I strongly condemn this action! This is the hyenism and baseness of some individuals taking advantage of the misfortune of people who had to leave their homes or businesses due to high water. I believe these selfish bastards will face the harshest punishments.” said the governor of the region, Josef Bělica.
On Monday afternoon, he stated that the water in the Moravian-Silesian region unfortunately took two more human lives, both in Krnov. One man was found outside in the water, the other man was found in an apartment in which an evacuation was recommended. “It’s unfortunate and I really wish nothing like this would happen again. Therefore, I repeat my request that people heed the instructions of the components of the integrated rescue system,” added Bělica.
Ostrava had to shut down the Třebovice heating plant, including the electrical switchboards. “Even despite the best efforts, it was not possible to maintain the operation of the Ostrava heating plant, as a result of the flood there was a shutdown of heat and hot water in the city,” said municipality spokeswoman Gabriela Pokorná. The remedy may take several days. People can find current information at website or on the customer line 800 800 860.
Ostrava: Evacuation of Privoz
After half past ten in the morning, the evacuation of the Přívoz district began. By 2 p.m., the firefighters had already taken away 250 people, including children. A helicopter was deployed and rescued three people. At the confluence of the Opava and Odra on the right bank of the Odra, there are two 50-meter-long cracks in the dike. It is not clear exactly how many people are in the area, but there are probably hundreds, maybe 500 residents. They are transported to the evacuation center in Černá louka.
“Solving the situation has the highest priority in order to seal the damaged parts of the dam and thus prevent a further influx of water into the threatened areas and eliminate possible further evacuations,” said the mayor of Ostrava, Jan Dohnal.
City officials urged residents not to travel to the city and parents not to send their children to school. “We want to call on parents not to send their children to school in the affected areas and to leave them at home. We haven’t ordered principals’ leave for the schools, but if the children don’t come, it will be accepted in some way,” Dohnal added.
Zátor: Torn down bridge and demolished houses
The flood once again affected Zátor in Bruntálsk, which in 1997, together with Troubka in Přerovsk, was one of the symbols of the devastating floods at that time. This time, high water washed away the bridge and damaged two houses. Parts of the perimeter walls were lost. People are without electricity and water supplies. The level of the river Opava reached up to three meters in places. Some houses near the stream were flooded up to their roofs.
Fire chief: Krnov messed it up!
Fire chief Vladimír Vlček said that Krnov failed to evacuate. According to him, the evacuation sites were not well chosen, some were flooded, and the evacuation was delayed. “This is a matter that primarily goes to the Krnov crisis staff,” said Wolf.
The deputy mayor of Krnov, Miroslav Binar, rejected this and stated that none of the evacuation centers were flooded. “For some, the water was close, but it did not reach the buildings. We did what we could. Krnov is a pancake. We don’t have any objects on the hills here,“ he said, adding that the city’s crisis staff also selected them based on experience from 1997. The city has 23,000 inhabitants and is one of the most affected in the region.
Krnov is without electricity and water supplies. “Now we are trying to restore the supply, but at first it will only be utility water,” stated Binar. In the city, the premises of the beverage company Kofola were also flooded.
Bohumín: Without electricity
A significant part of Bohumín is without electricity due to a flooded substation, mobile and data networks were out, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools are closed. Food stores are also flooded, water supply and medicines are being dealt with, the Moravian-Silesian region has offered help. Transport is very limited. The city informs residents using a megaphone.
The evacuation of people from the Starý Bohumín part is not ruled out. “Probably as a result of damage to the unfinished flood barriers near the D1 highway, the water was constantly rising for us there. City representatives will go to the site and then decide whether it will be necessary to evacuate residents from this part of the city,” spokeswoman Jana Končítková said.
Flooded Opava: Damaged bridge
The swollen Opava river damaged the bridge in Opava’s Ratibořské street between the center and the Kateřinky housing estate. The structure is now being inspected by ŘSD staff. The bridge was suspected to be damaged on Sunday. At that time it was already closed to the public.
Opava City Hall temporarily closed most of the city’s bridges to cars and pedestrians. They will be used only after checking whether the flood did not damage them.
