The Guatemala Chamber of Tourism (Camtur) was selected as a finalist for the Tourism Excellence Awards thanks to the “Climate Action Strategy for Tourism in Guatemala”, an initiative that seeks to transform the sector towards a more resilient and sustainable model. The nomination was announced in January 2026, after evaluation by an international jury, and the award ceremony will take place on January 21 in Madrid, during one of the most important tourism events in the world.

The nomination as a finalist places Guatemala on a global stage regarding sustainability and climate action applied to tourism. The international jury, made up of tourism, art and gastronomy leaders from different countries, evaluated high-impact projects from various regions of the world. In this process, the strategy promoted by Camtur stood out for its comprehensive approach and national reach.

This recognition highlights the commitment of the Guatemalan tourism sector with current challenges. At a time when climate change affects destinations, communities and local economies, the fact that a country initiative reaches this final stage speaks of clear progress in the way of planning the turismo.

The Climate Action Strategy for Tourism in Guatemala It is an instrument that was born from a participatory process. Public institutions, the private sector, academia and international cooperation participated in its construction, which made it possible to integrate different perspectives and experiences. This joint work resulted in a roadmap with a long-term vision.

The document defines a strategy focused on strengthening the sector, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, measuring impacts and access to financing. It also includes actions for the regeneration of tourist destinations, with the aim of improving the competitiveness of the sector without neglecting environmental and social responsibility.

One of the main points of the strategy is its focus on resilience. In addition, it presents sustainability as a competitive advantage. Betting on responsible practices also strengthens the country’s image among travelers, investors and international markets. The nomination for Tourism Excellence Awards reinforces the positioning of Guatemala as a regional reference in sustainable tourism.

Camtur also competes in the category Public Excellence Awardwhich is defined by online voting. This process will be enabled until January 14, 2026 and allows anyone to support initiatives. The official awards ceremony will take place on January 21, 2026 in Madrid, within the framework of Featurewith the presence of authorities, sector leaders and international media. These are the steps to vote:

  1. enter the official voting link
  2. scroll down to the “Tourism Excellence Awards Finalists” section
  3. look for the option located in position 12 from top to bottom. There appears “GUATEMALA – CAMTUR- Guatemala Tourism Climate Strategy: National Plan for resilient, low-carbon and sustainable tourism”
  4. Select the option and click submit.
