“Anti-Jewish” jersey in the Paris metro: the man taken into police custody, the psychiatric examination detected nothing

The image taken on Monday by an Internet user went viral on social networks. The photo shows a man from behind, shaved head, wearing a dark football jersey on which, instead of the player’s name, appears the inscription “anti-Jew”. The individual has since been actively sought. He presented himself to investigators on Thursday October 24 and was taken into police custody.

“The psychiatric examination did not reveal any anomaly, alteration or abolition of discernment” of the suspect, specified the prosecution which had requested this examination.

The man, born in 1996, presented himself to a police department where he was taken into custody, according to the same source, confirming information from franceinfo. Seized by the prefect of police Laurent Nuñez, the Paris prosecutor’s office opened an investigation for provocation of racial hatred.

This case comes against a backdrop of a sharp increase in racist or religious attacks in France. At the beginning of August, former Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin assured that 887 anti-Semitic acts had been recorded in the first half of 2024, almost three times more than during the same period in 2023.
