TRENDS for family travel in Indonesia are experiencing an interesting shift towards the end of 2025. The city of Yogyakarta is now officially ranked first as the most popular domestic destination, shifting the position of Bali which previously always dominated accommodation searches.

This latest data was released by the digital travel service platform Agoda through the Travel Outlook 2026 report. Based on search trends on the platform, tourist interest in visiting Yogyakarta jumped significantly by 29% compared to the previous year.

Agoda’s Senior Country Director for Indonesia, Gede Gunawan, revealed that Yogyakarta’s increase in ranking was triggered by the completeness of the facilities and the variety of activities offered.

“Platform users are interested in visiting Yogyakarta because of the many recreational options, cultural sites and educational activities in the area,” said Gunawan, quoted on Tuesday (30/12).

Shift in Domestic Tourism Rankings

Bali’s decline to second place marks a change in the preferences of family tourists who are now starting to look at cultural and education-based destinations.

In third position, Bandung remains the favorite with an increase in searches of 22%. The combination of a cool climate, culinary richness and child-friendly outdoor activities is the main attraction of the Flower City.

Completing the list of the top five domestic destinations, Jakarta is in fourth place, followed by Malang in fifth position. These five cities are considered to have a tourism ecosystem that is best prepared to welcome a surge in family tourists during the year-end holiday period.

“Traveling is now not just about visiting destinations, but also creating memories together in places like Yogyakarta and Bandung, which are becoming increasingly popular towards the end of the year,” said Gunawan.

Singapore and Shanghai Dominate the International Market

For overseas destinations, Singapore is still firmly in the top position as the most favorite country for Indonesian families. Easy accessibility and lots of modern, family-friendly attractions are the main reasons why Singapore is hard to displace.

Tokyo follows in second place thanks to its attractive combination of traditional culture and popular attractions such as Tokyo Disneyland.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok occupy third and fourth positions respectively due to their close location and variety of shopping and culinary tourism.

A surprise came in fifth place, with Shanghai making it into the top five international list replacing Hong Kong. This city in China recorded the highest growth in interest with a spike in searches reaching 130%.

“Internationally, increasing interest in cities such as Singapore and Shanghai reflects a desire to explore diverse experiences,” concluded Gunawan. (Ant/Z-1)
