He had worked in hiding within the military wing of the ANC, during apartheid and had notably been arrested during the state of emergency in 1989 (end of apartheid in 1991). He was Minister of Arts and Culture of the Republic of South Africa from 2014 to 2014, then Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture until 2023, according to the site of his embassy. He was assigned to the French Embassy in February 2024.
